In an innovative industry collaboration, Carrboro Coffee Roasters President Scott Conary will be heading to his family home in Deer Isle, Maine to work with the fine folks at 44 North Coffee Roasters. The owners at 44 North, Melissa Raftery and Megan Wood, will take on the roasting of one of the exclusive Direct Relationship coffees that Conary has personally sourced.

The coffee, a Red Bourbon varietal lot called Red Cuchilla, was carefully grown by Antonio & Anabella Meneses whose Santa Felisa Estate is nestled under volcanos in the Acatenango region of Guatemala.  This coffee offers a honey fragrance with notes of caramel, a tangerine sweet acidity, and a silky, toffee body.

“I am very excited to see what these up & coming roasters can do with this delightful coffee,” said Scott Conary, “Megan & Melissa have done an amazing job on the coffees they have sourced so far and in honor of their efforts I want to help brew the batch that they roast in their shop!”

44 North Coffee was born in 2010 on a small island off the coast of Maine and shares many of the same philosophical tenets as Carrboro Coffee.  They lovingly roast the beans they acquire through fair purchasing practices in the upstairs of the historic Deer Isle schoolhouse and currently have wholesale accounts with several cafés and restaurants around Maine. This is a special partnership for Conary because of his deep connection to the island; his family has resided on Deer Isle for over 7 generations.
